WHEN WAS AKTION REGEN ESTABLISHED?
Aktion Regen was founded by the Viennese gynecologist Dr. Maria Hengstberger in 1989. After undertaking a volunteer trip to provide medical services in Ethiopia with Karlheinz Böhm, she became aware of the impact family planning can have in enabling people to escape the poverty trap. Her book “Water to the Roots” describes her experience in Ethiopia in 1989, which led her to establish Aktion Regen.
WHAT DOES AKTION REGEN MEAN?
Oftentimes we receive the question where the name of the organization Aktion Regen (English: Rain Initiative) comes from. The word rain symbolizes the continuous support provided through knowledge transfers. We believe knowledge gives people the opportunity to lead a self-determined life. Many small raindrops in the form of educational initiatives form a river and achieve a lasting effect.
WHAT DO WE OFFER OTHER NGOs?
We offer other NGOS to train their employees and certify them as Rain Workers. Sustainable development, environmental protection and the future of the planet are all impacted by population dynamics. Therefore, initiatives to provide people with education and choices in family planning can have a significant impact on other developmental projects.
WHAT ARE OUR GOALS?
The main goals of Aktion Regen are promoting women’s health and maternal-child-health and empowering women in less developed countries, thereby reducing poverty. These goals are achieved by providing education in family planning, sexual health, maternal and child health, FGM (female genital mutilation) and HIV / AIDS prevention.
HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US?
Aktion Regen is largely financed by donations and sustained through the support of dedicated volunteers. You can support us with single or monthly donations, sponsor a Rain Worker, volunteer in our office in Vienna with fundraising, PR or social media tasks, sponsor us as a company, or if you are trained as a doctor or midwife, help conduct trainings in our project countries.
